On September 28, 1998, the Mississippi Gulf Coast took a direct hit by Hurricane Georges that left approximately 230,000 people without electricity and about 15,000 residents in public shelters. In Biloxi, Mississippi, flooding and hurricane-force winds (over 95 miles per hour) damaged several homes and businesses, necessitating curfew and a state of emergency.

California Guide To Saving Money

  • To save as much as hundreds of dollars a year on the costs of electricity in California, make certain that any new appliances you purchase are energy-efficient
  • Air conditioners and furnaces use a lot of energy, and you should make sure they are energy-efficient.
  • Information on the energy efficiency of major appliances is found on Energy Guide Labels required by federal law.
  • Enrolling in load management programs and off-hour rate programs offered by your California electric utility may save you up to $100 a year in electricity costs.
  • Call your California electric utility for information about these, and other, cost-saving programs available in California.
  • If you are a low income California resident, you may be eligible for special low cost energy programs in California.
  • Using compact fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescant light bulbs can save you $9.00 or more per bulb per year.
