Controversial New Database Allows Lookup of Any California State Worker's Salary

Given a full or partial name, a controversial new database makes it possible to look up the salary of any California state worker.

A recent court ruling that the pay information of state workers is public information allowed the Sacramento Bee to post these salaries online. As can be expected, many state workers are complaining that making this information public gives the public too much insight into their lives. Many citizens appreciate the chance to see first hand the salaries, and overtime pay, that some goverment workers are making.

Some people claim that since private industry doesn't give out the salaries of all it's workers, even to shareholders, government salary information should also not be available. This comparison isn't valid though: If you want you can sell the stock of that company, or choose not to buy it's products. None of us can similarly opt out of paying the huge sums that governments take from our pockets in the form of every increasing taxes to support burgeoning programs.

Many state workers, and even some non-state workers, think that the only searches possible should be on an aggregate basis, or only by job title. This, however, would be a bad idea since state workers could easily lie about their job titles. Plus, to find out what some government worker makes, you would have to directly confront them with the question "What is your job title?" Even if they tell you the basic job title, if they leave off "Level II", or "Level III", you could be mislead into thinking they are at a lower pay scale. Having this list accessible by name is much better, since it should always be possible to find out the name of a state worker.

Sadly, this database does not cover county, or city, government officials. Still it will cover the salaries of state workers such as state agencies like the DMV, state prisons, state police and highway patrol.
