Clarence Ray Allen Execution Scheduled For Midnight January 16 2006

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal from convicted killer 76-year-old Clarence Ray Allen. The appeal claimed that he was too old and feeble to be executed. The convicted killer is legally blind, claims to be nearly deaf, and is confined to a wheelchair. He is to be executed by injection early Tuesday for the triple murder he ordered rfom behind bars to silce witnesses to another killing that he was convicted of.

If he is put to death, he will be the oldest person executed in California, and the second oldest put to death nationally, since the Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to be reinstated in 1976.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has pointed out that the California Supreme Court and a federal appeals court have both refused to stay the execution sentence.

According to news stories, Allen's heart stopped in September 2005, but doctors revived him to return him to death row!

Despite the Supreme Court in general seeming to want to rule on the issue of long drawn out stays on death row, and whether they consistute cruel and unusual punishment, Justice Clarence Thomas has disagreed, stating that an inmate in Florida who was jailed for 27 years, "could long ago have ended his anxieties and uncertainties by submitting to what the people of Florida have deemed him to deserve: execution."
